Romanised Scores Breeders’ Cup Mile Berth At Deauville

Robert Ng’s 4-year-old Romanised (IRE), under jockey Billy Lee, powered down the final furlong to defeat Wertheimer and Frere’s 3-year-old Shaman (IRE) by one length in Sunday’s, one-mile Prix du Haras de Fresnay-Le Buffard – Jacques le Marois (G1) at Deauville, and gained an automatic berth into the TVG Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) through the international Breeders’ Cup Challenge.

The Breeders’ Cup Challenge is an international series of 86 stakes races whose winners receive automatic starting positions and fees paid into a corresponding race of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, which will be held at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California on Nov. 1-2.

As a part of the benefits of the Challenge series, the Breeders’ Cup will pay the pre-entry and entry fees for the Romanised to start in the TVG Breeders’ Cup Mile. Breeders’ Cup also will provide a $40,000 travel allowance for all starters based outside of North America to compete in the World Championships.

Romanised, a bay son of Holy Roman Emperor (IRE) out of the Indian Ridge (IRE) mare Romantic Venture (IRE) and trained by Ken Condon, becomes the eighth “Win and You’re In” qualifier for the TVG Breeders’ Cup Mile this year. The first seven to have qualified are: Do It Again (SAF), winner of the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate (G1) at Kenilworth, South Africa; Tamburo Di Oro (CHI), who won the Gran Premio Club Hipico Falabella (G1) in Santiago, Chile; Bolo (USA), winner of the Shoemaker Mile (G1) at Santa Anita, Indy Champ (JPN), who captured the Yasuda Kinen (G1) in Tokyo, Japan; Lord Glitters (FR), who won the Queen Anne Stakes (G1) at Royal Ascot; the recently retired Too Darn Hot (GB), who won the Qatar Sussex Stakes (G1) at Goodwood and Got Stormy, who won yesterday’s Fourstardave Handicap (G1) at Saratoga Race Course.

Over the straight course at Deauville against seven rivals, Romanised won his second Group 1 race, and is again finding the form that allowed him to capture the Irish 2000 Guineas (G1) in May of 2018.

Romanized was settled in mid-pack during the first half-mile as his stablemate Success Days (IRE) set the pace ahead of Shaman. Just behind Romanised was the 2-1 favorite and Coronation Stakes (G1)-winning filly Watch Me (FR), while ahead in third along the rail was Godolphin’s 3-year-old Line of Duty (IRE), last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) winner.

Approaching final two furlongs, Lee urged Romanized forward down the center of the course and passed Shaman in deep stretch, while line of duty finished a nose back in third. Watch Me never threatened, finishing fourth.

Romanised, who completed the one mile in 1:35.16, came into Sunday’s race off a one-length victory in the seven-furlong Paddy Power Minstrel Stakes (G2) at the Curragh on July 20. That score ended a six-race stretch of off-the-board finishes dating back to the Irish 2000 Guineas, which included a fourth-place run in the “Win and You’re In” Queen Anne Stakes (G1) at Royal Ascot on June 18.

Following the race, Condon indicated that Romanised could be pointed to either the Qatar Prix de la Foret (G1) at ParisLongchamp on Oct. 6 or the TVG Breeders’ Cup Mile on Nov. 2
